Beijing to Guangzhou Day 4

This morning we said good-bye to Jacky and Mr Sun. We checked out of the Jade Palace Hotel in Beijing to catch a 12pm flight to Guangzhou. My travel group arrives in the morning from LAX so to avoid problems my facilitator wanted me here waiting on them. The Beijing hotel was nice. But our Guangzhou hotel...wow! It's a Marriott and you can certainly see that. The lobby is absolutely stunning.
There's a Starbucks actually IN the hotel. I think Carla may be more excited about that than anything else. There's also a 7-11 right outside one door. A  McDonald's outside another. Plus the hotel restaurants. I don't think we'll have trouble finding something to eat.
Our flight was wonderful. Much better than United. I wish we could get home on an Air China flight cuz they know how to rock it. The seats were more comfortable with more legroom. Even though I paid an upgrade to get more legroom on the United flight. The service was impeccable. It was a really nice flight. I even took a little nap on this one... which I couldn't do on that long flight despite the fact that I'd been awake all night.
Our room is gorgeous! The bathroom is phenomenal. Just look at it. Amazing, right?

And the bed is so cushy soft. You actually sink down into it when you sit on it. Unlike the Beijing hotel bed. Which didn't move. Seriously. Not at all. Like sleeping on a slab. They accidentally put us in a king size bed instead of 2 doubles. But since we're just here tonight and tomorrow night we decided just to leave it that way. Carla and I will bunk together. We're so exhausted from all the traveling and touring I doubt we even roll over tonight.
Guangzhou has 13 million people. It's a lot like NYC. Busy, fast paced, going at all hours of the day and night, lots of people. We have a great view of the city from our 10th floor window.
Since we had a free evening on our own we got a cab to Shamian Island to meet up with a blogger buddy of mine. Nicole and I were logged in on the same day. Her Lily and my Mia are only a couple weeks apart in age and both from Jiangxi Province.
We had dinner at the famous (at least within China adoption circles) Cow and Bridge restaurant. It was good food.
We had a great time visiting. I even got to hold Lily for a few minutes. She's an absolute doll.
After dinner we stopped at 7-11 to stock up the mini fridge. A mini-bar Coke is 30 yuan. From 7-11 it's 3. Big difference. I tried some hot and spicy fish soup flavored Lay's. One word...yuck. The green apple Slurpee was interesting though. LOL!

We meet the other families in my group at 10:30am. Then we'll meet the rest of our China Team and find out the specifics of our itinerary. I should know soon exactly when I'll meet Mia. I know it's Weds...just not sure when.

I don't know how accurate this is, but when we were there we heard that they put the softer beds only on certain floors....the floors where they put the Americans and other Anglos. The Chinese hate the soft beds, but they got tired of complaints from the foreigners.

If you get out and about in the neighborhooods during the day, you'll see people napping on the sidewalks outside the shops. Guess the sidewalk is no harder than their beds.

I don't know what shops are still open on Shamian Island, but if you are able to find Peter, he is a fantastic portrait-in-a-bottle painter. And his sister is a sweetheart.

We stayed in that same hotel when we were finalizing our adoption in '05. It still looks just as beautiful as it was then! We took our group's photos with our children on those same steps that are in your photo. Wow, it brings back memories, for sure! I really want to go back!

I'm all tingly! The pics of the hotel bring back so many memories for me. Seems like only yesterday but it was almost 5 years that we were there with our little (frightened) Maddy. Tell Martin and Norman I say hello!
